Bäckafall is a Swedish duo based out of Gothenburg, Sweden. With musical influences from Haiti, Ireland, and Mali, plus years of experience in the world of contemporary and traditional music, Bäckafall has truly found a new sound in the world of Swedish folk.
On their self-titled debut album, the close friendship and collaborative energy between nyckelharpist Samuel Lundh and guitarist Hampus Grönberg is on display. Bäckafall’s debut album was produced, recorded, and engineered entirely by the duo, and celebrates the elemental and spiritual relationship in the combined sound of their instruments. Samuel Lundh’s nyckelharpa (Swedish keyed fiddle) is at once baroque, edgy, and ethereal, while Hampus Grönberg’s guitar is intricate, deliberate, and energetic.
In the world of Swedish music, there is a pattern where young masculine folk bands assemble to record blazing, difficult music. Through their own music, Samuel and Hampus work against this stereotype: Whether technical, fast, spiritual, or calm, the musical world of Bäckafall celebrates fragility, intricacy, and reflection. As a duo, Bäckafall represents a world of understanding between traditions, cultures, musical sounds and, most of all, between friends.
